JAPANESE CHERRY BLOSSOM CELEBRATION EVENTS APRIL 1-21: Fun With Origami Swarthmore University Taiko Drummers Japanese Tea Demonstration
Visit by the 21st Tokyo Japanese Cherry Blossom Queen Sunday, April 22 Children will learn how to make a very simple Japanese origami kimono. Then they will create long, elegant Japanese paper figures. Whether the figure is a samurai, geisha or self-portrait, children will decorate them in a style all their own. All materials are provided. Ideal for ages 3 to 7.
Children will enjoy making graceful and elegant Japanese ink paintings. We will use traditional bamboo brushes and learn the basic brush strokes necessary to create our own bamboo forest painting. Using shades of gray to deepest black, our bamboo forests will emerge in the free spirit of sumi-e. Sumi-e paintings are done in black, white and the five shades of gray. Japanese call them the seven “colors.” This style of monochromatic simplistic painting was adopted from Chinese calligraphy. The point of this painting technique is to produce an impression of the subject from memory. This class is intended for those 7 years and older. Sunday, April 29, 1:00-3:00pm. Come celebrate trees at the official arboretum of the Commonwealth. This fun afternoon will include tree related crafts and activities, a tree climbing demonstrations, a Big Trees tour, Discovery Stations, face painting and the Philadelphia Zoo on Wheels (featuring animals that live in or use trees).
