Tree-Related Services for Municipalities
Narberth Borough, PA
The Morris Arboretum’s Urban Forestry Consultants provide municipalities with services that help them better manage their tree resources.
At Narberth Borough, we provided a GIS-based street tree inventory and assessment that prioritized tree care needs, submitted a tree management plan with a proposed budget for deferred and ongoing maintenance, and drafted a customized tree ordinance to fit the Borough’s needs and desires. Preserving Trees During Construction
Independence National Historical Park
Independence National Historical Park is operated by the National Park Service. Preserving important trees during construction activities was an important part of the Independence Hall’s overall restoration effort. The Morris Arboretum’s Urban Forestry Consultants documented existing conditions, reviewed construction specifications, and provided expert information and guidance to help assure a successful construction project and continued health for the trees of this historic site. Two major root zones were used to quantify construction effects' to trees. The Morris Arboretum’s Urban Forestry Consultants expressed this information in CAD as shown below.
Tree Protection Zone (TPZ): This represents the circular area around the tree required to assure tree survival. There is a direct relationship between incursions into the TPZ and increased likelihood of tree mortality.
Structural Root Zone (SRZ): Structural roots anchor and hold the tree upright. If these roots are severed, it can destabilize the tree. Furthermore, cutting major woody roots can promote fungal infections leading to decay, which can have both immediate and long-term impacts on tree health and stability. Translation link.
