Endowments

$15.4 Million

Fiscal responsibility, balanced operating budgets and a well-managed, modest endowment totaling $37 million characterize the Morris Arboretum’s current financial health. However, fiscal stability has been challenged in recent years due to a steep rise in employee benefit expenses and a more volatile stock market. The need to grow the Arboretum’s unrestricted and restricted endowments has never been more critical to ensuring the Arboretum’s future stability.

PLACE :
First and foremost the Morris Arboretum is a historic garden with world-class horticulture display and a collection of unique garden features, plants, fountains and buildings. These iconic and beloved historic features require annual maintenance and scheduled renewal. The campaign seeks to secure an adequate endowment for historic preservation. Additionally, this goal includes raising sufficient endowment to cover the annual operating costs and scheduled replacement costs for the new Horticulture Center Complex and Out on a Limb permanent exhibit. In total, the goal is to increase endowment restricted for facilities by adding an additional $6.75 million, which would ensure funding for the annually scheduled list of improvements required for upkeep and for periodic major capital improvements of both existing and new facilities and exhibits.

     $6.75 Million

PEOPLE:
The need to increase staff compensation and professional growth opportunities at the Morris Arboretum emerged in strategic planning as one of the primary institutional objectives to be addressed over the next three years. The quality of the Morris Arboretum’s programs and its spectacular landscapes clearly reflect the high standards and level of commitment that have been set by the Arboretum staff. Average salary increases over the past three years have been 2.5%, which is well below the average annual inflation rate of 3.49% (www.inflationdata.com). An additional $3.75 million restricted to staff compensation and endowment of key positions would generate an additional $187,500 annually for salary increases and for attracting and retaining a first-rate staff.

     $ 3.45 Million

PROGRAM :
Central to the Arboretum’s mission is a vibrant education, outreach and research program. Each year the Arboretum offers more than 150 on-site classes and welcomes almost 20,000 children. Our Arboretum consulting team provides advice and support to more than 200 entities throughout the year. With the opportunity for program expansion in the new Horticulture Center Complex, the Arboretum is eager to ensure that funding for growth and for these missionrelated programs is secure.

     $ 1.2 Million

UNRESTRICTED:
Unrestricted endowments provide flexibility and opportunities for growth. An additional $4 million would generate $200,000 annually which would be used to address the Arboretum’s institutional goals of enhancing the visitor experience through greater interpretation, technological support and increased programmatic offerings. Additional revenue from endowment would enhance marketing initiatives, providing revenue to reach a broader and more diverse audience and would enable us to reach other strategic goals such as hiring the first full time volunteer coordinator to manage the more than 550 adults who volunteer each year.
