Message from the Campaign Co-Chairs

We are delighted to share with you the exciting plans for the future of the Morris Arboretum. We know that you share our opinion that the Arboretum is a world-class institution and one of Philadelphia’s cultural treasures. This spring the Arboretum will celebrate 75 years as a public garden. As many have witnessed, it has come far since June of 1933 when it first opened to the public. In recent years, Board members, Arboretum staff and loyal donors have partnered together to restore the garden to its original splendor, create new horticultural displays and develop engaging educational and research programs.

This is a unique moment for the Arboretum. As we embark on the largest campaign in the Arboretum’s history, we take pride in the knowledge that the Arboretum has never been stronger: the gardens, fountains and distinctive landscapes are widely reputed for their beauty; the Arboretum is blessed with extraordinary volunteer leadership and a most talented staff; and our plans are compelling and urgent.

Our plans call for a new Horticulture Center Complex for teaching, training and staff support with the goal to achieve the highest level of sustainability and to set an example for green construction and operation. We plan to build an exciting new multi-generational, fully accessible tree canopy exhibit which will increase our ability to educate the public about why we need trees, why trees need us and how we must be better stewards of our environment. We have also set ambitious goals for endowment to ensure the future stability of this world-class institution.

This campaign is about caring for the land and educating and motivating the public to better understand their role in stewardship and conservation. It is about people and developing programs and facilities to engage a broader public in our mission. Finally, it is about securing a strong financial future for the Morris Arboretum. We thank you in advance for your continued support of the Morris Arboretum. We welcome your comments and questions about our campaign plans, and we look forward to partnering with you in the months ahead as work together to achieve these vital goals.

With warmest appreciation,

Susan M. Oberwager
