Cotswold Sheep
cor-ten steel, 1980

When viewed from a distance, these Cor-ten steel Cotswold sheep seem startlingly alive. They were fabricated at 125 percent of life-size, to avoid appearing diminished by the vast meadow. Historically, garden parks like the Arboretum sometimes included ornamental farms with livestock. Not only did sheep trim the lawn, but as picturesque counterpoints to the cultivated landscape, they provided a reference to an agricultural past.
