A Day of Japanese Papermaking

Saturday, March 15

Japanese paper or washi is known for its transparency, strength and beauty. The lecture will discuss how to cook, clean and pound the fibers and prepare the vats needed
to make Japanese paper. You will have the opportunity to practice traditional sheet formation as well as learn decorative techniques for making your paper special. Bring delicate two-dimensional items to
include in your paper if you wish to further personalize your creations. Beginning and advanced papermaking students are welcome.

April 5

Drawing from Nature for the Reluctant Beginner

3 Saturdays
April 5, 12, 19
10 a.m. – 12 noon

Janice Merendino - Exhibiting Fine Artist

These drawing classes promise to be lively and a lot of fun. They are designed especially for those who can’t even draw a straight line, let
alone the rhododendrons in their garden! Through a set of simple and non-intimidating exercises, students are taught the same advanced
drawing techniques that artists use. This unique approach enables beginning students to draw natural objects at a level far beyond what
they thought possible. Perfect for painters who want to “brush” up on their drawing skills, or parents with their children (8 years and up).
People who have taken the class before are welcome to return for continued instruction. All materials will be supplied by the instructor.

writing method as a gateway for new, exciting writing of our own. No previous creative writing experience is necessary. Please bring

May 4

Painting the Bamboo Forest

Sunday, May 4
1 – 2:30 p.m.

Allison Zito - Artist and Teacher, Harcum College

Learn the techniques for making these graceful and elegant Japanese ink paintings. We will use traditional bamboo brushes and learn the
basic brush strokes necessary to create our own bamboo forest painting. Using shades of gray to deepest black, our bamboo forests will
emerge in the free spirit of sumi-e. Sumi-e paintings are done in black, white and the five shades of gray. Japanese call them the seven “colors.” This style of monochromatic simplistic painting was adopted from Chinese calligraphy. The point of this painting technique is to produce an impression of the subject from memory.
