Observing Nesting Birds:
The Challenges and Rewards
Saturday, June 7
8 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Ruth Pfeffer -
Expert Birder and Trip Leader
During spring and summer, love is in the air,
at least for birds. We will visit the
Wissahickon’s Andorra Natural Area to search
for and observe nesting bird species. These
include both migratory song birds and our
resident feathered friends. The breeding and
nesting season is an extremely busy time for
birds. Male and female birds are finding
mates, building nests, incubating eggs, and
feeding ravenous young birds. Observing
nesting species can sharpen your birdwatching
skills because of diversity of activities that
birds engage in. Some of the birds we might
see include the blue-winged warbler, eastern
tohee and oven bird. We will walk trails that
provide varied habitat to see woodland species
and those birds that prefer open fields. We
will meet in the Andorra Natural Area.
Directions will be sent.

Non-members: $35

For a truly enchanted evening at the Arboretum, mark your calendar for Friday, June 13. Join friends, neighbors, and colleagues as we enjoy an evening in the Rose Garden at the annual Moonlight & Roses fundraising gala. Funds raised from the event will support the Arboretums Out on a Limb – Tree Adventure Exhibit. Advisory Board Chair and loyal supporter, Ann Reed is the evening’s honoree and Lisa Butler and Marggy Ells, this year’s Moonlight & Roses co-chairs, are working very hard to ensure that this event will be a spectacular celebration.
The party begins at 6pm with cocktails in the Rose Garden and continues with dinner and dancing under the stars. Once again, guests will have the option to dine in one of two tents – the “Moonlight Tent” featuring soft music in an intimate setting (behind the Widener Visitors Center) or the “Rose Tent” featuring the music of Jellyroll, the party band back by popular demand for their sixth year at Moonlight & Roses.
New this year, Benefactors, Patrons and guests with special needs will receive premium valet parking passes for parking at the Widener Visitors Center. All other guests will park at Bloomfield Farm and will be shuttled in trolleys to the event. Also new this year, there is a “Young Friends” dinner option as well as cocktail only option for those 35 and under.
Reservations are required and space is very limited. Invitations will be mailed to all Chestnut members and above, as well as to previous Moonlight & Roses donors. Conservation Arboriculture: Care of Veteran Trees
Tuesday, June 17
9:00a.m. - 4 p.m.
Neville Fay - Consultant, Treework Environmental Practice
Philip van Wassenar - Urban Forest Innovations Inc.
For Professional Arborists - ISA continuing education unit
A new school of thought has arisen in our approach to managing veteran trees. Known as conservation arboriculture, this movement is paradigm shift in the way we think about this aspect of arboriculture, and is improving our understanding of the aging tree process. Our presenters, Neville Fay of the United Kingdom and Philip van Wassenaer from Ontario, are on the forefront of conservation arboriculture, and are challenging us to think of trees in a whole new way. In one of their few appearances here in the U.S., the instructors will review the history of veteran tree care in Europe and North America, discuss biodiversity, co-evolution, and will demonstrate newly developed techniques such as natural fracture pruning and coronet cuts. The use of Picus Tomography, a non-invasive tool that uses sound waves to detect decay in trees, will be demonstrated as well. This is an opportunity not to be missed and will be valuable to anyone who cares for older trees.
Fee: $200 (includes lunch)
