Continuing Education Units for Arborists

Many of the Arboretum’s professional training courses carry International Society of
Arboriculture (ISA) Continuing Education Units. If you are an ISA certified arborist and need
to maintain certification by taking 30 credits over a three-year period, you may want to sign up
for classes at the Arboretum. If you have questions about this, please contact Jan McFarlan,
(215) 247-5777, ext. 156.

Note: These classes can be taken by anyone, they are not restricted to professionals.

March 12

Preserving Trees During Construction

Wednesday, March 12
9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Jason Lubar
Associate Director of Urban Forestry
Robert Wells
Associate Director of Outreach Arboriculture
For Professional Arborists - ISA continuing eduation unit

Successful tree preservation during construction assures that the project’s goals are achieved without jeopardizing the health and
lifespan of protected trees. Since there must be a collaborative process by decision-makers for this to occur, people from all disciplines involved with the construction process will benefit from this class. The instructors will assist you in determining which trees to preserve. They will cover how to designate adequate tree protection zones based on the tree’s structural and biological needs, how to specify and install protective fencing, and how construction processes such as cut/fill, trenching, and soil compaction effect both existing and proposed trees. Tree physiology
and biology will be explored in this class. Students will be provided with comprehensive technical information about tree-related construction impacts. They will leave with an understanding about how these impacts relate to tree growth and longevity.

Fee: $110 (includes lunch)

June 17

Conservation Arboriculture: Care of Veteran Trees

Tuesday, June 17
9:00a.m. - 4 p.m.

Neville Fay - Consultant, Treework Environmental Practice
Philip van Wassenar -
Urban Forest Innovations Inc.
For Professional Arborists - ISA continuing education unit

A new school of thought has arisen in our approach to managing veteran trees. Known as conservation arboriculture, this movement is paradigm shift in the way we think about this aspect of arboriculture, and is improving our understanding of the aging tree process. Our presenters, Neville Fay of the United Kingdom and Philip van Wassenaer from Ontario, are on the forefront of conservation arboriculture, and are challenging us to think of trees in a whole new way. In one of their few appearances here in the U.S., the instructors will review the history of veteran tree care in Europe and North America, discuss biodiversity, co-evolution, and will demonstrate newly developed techniques such as natural fracture pruning and coronet cuts. The use of Picus Tomography, a non-invasive tool that uses sound waves to detect decay in trees, will be demonstrated as well. This is an opportunity not to be missed and will be valuable to anyone who cares for older trees.

Fee: $200 (includes lunch)
