Ravine Garden
The Ravine Garden was installed by John Morris in 1913 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Compton Estate, and expense lists from this time indicate that “Japanese gardeners” were involved in the construction. Also called a “valley garden” in England, the ravine garden was one of many types of Victorian “rock gardens.” This informal yet intimate setting was a favorite of English and American gardeners and it shows their love for the “rock beauty of mountain scenery.”
