Mercury

Anonymous, Greco-Roman
Mercury
cast bronze on marble base, c. 1913
Reproduction of Greek original, 4th century BC

According to classical mythology, Mercury was the god of commerce, eloquence, travel, cunning and theft. Fleet of foot, he wore magical, winged sandals in his role as messenger to the other gods.

This bronze sculpture is an early twentieth century reproduction of an ancient original in the collection of the National Museum in Naples, Italy. Mercury is shown as an athletic young man, sporting his trademark footwear. Resting on the marble summit of Mount Ida, he carries a message in his left hand.
