Morris Arboretum Presents Sixth Mid-Atlantic Conference
Invasive Plants: Research, Removal and Renewal

PHILADELPHIA – Certain plants introduced to the ecosystem can cause a great deal of harm, including the reduction of other plant populations, the animals that depend upon them and the loss of biological diversity. Our quality of life ultimately depends upon the health of our natural resources. Invasive plants are a problem we all can contribute to solving. Learn how at the Morris Arboretum’s “Invasive Plants, Research, Removal and Renewal,” to be held August 15 and 16 at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. This seminar will examine topics ranging from invasive plant control technologies, to how deer contribute to the spread of invasive plants, to how native plant recovery prevents the spread of invasive plants.

The keynote speaker will be photographer, author, naturalist and teacher, C. Colston Burrell. Mr. Burrell will present recommendations for suitable native plants for urban and suburban horticultural settings. On the first day, the seminar will have two tracks: “Invasive Species Basics and Current Control Options,” and “What’s New,” with a joint session to conclude the day. The second day’s topics will be presented as one main track, covering issues such as Aquatic Communities, Early Detection, and Preserving Biodiversity.

Sponsored by the Morris Arboretum and Mid-Atlantic Exotic Pest Plant Council, Inc., the cost for both days is $185 and $100 for one day. The student fee is $95 for two days and $50 for one day. The fee includes lunch, breaks and a one year membership in MA-EPPC. Credit toward pesticide applicators’ certification is offered for certain topic discussions. For a complete brochure please contact 215-247-5777 ext. 156 or 125.
