Big Trees Tour

Grades -
All Ages
Tour length - 1 hour

The Arboretum is over 100 years old and so are many of our trees. Many trees in our living collection are recognized as significant examples of their species, and some of the oldest in the area.

Students will:

  • Examine some of Philadelphia's oldest, rarest, and largest trees - some are even Pennsylvania State Champions!
  • Discover trees that are native to Pennsylvania, Japan, China and even North Africa
  • Learn about the Dawn Redwoods that were originally found more than 150 million years ago in North America
  • Get a close-up look at the state tree of Pennsylvania, the Canada Hemlock
  • Look at trees that are used for medicinal purposes by the Native Americans
