Horticultural variety, native to eastern Europe and Asia Minor.
Standing watch near the Swan Pond, the tabletop Scotch elm is a Pennsylvania state champion tree. This specimen appears on the 1909 Atlas of Compton, and was planted by John Morris during the Victorian-era vogue of weeping and contorted trees. The weeping portion of the plant was grafted high onto its understock, allowing one to look up into the cascading canopy. A plant of curiosity and fascination for visitors, it remains a continual reminder of our horticultural heritage.
