photos of the wetland
area; pre-construction (2001) versus post-construction (2004)

This is
an Autumn 2001 view of the site from the northeast, before
the
construction began. The tree on the left is a red oak
(Quercus rubra),
and the one on the right is a boxelder (Acer negundo);
Chestnut Hill College
is visible in the background. (Photos
in this sequence were mostly taken by Pam Morris.)

This is a photo of the same
two trees, the first spring after construction. The
hydrology of the wetland is established and planting of the
banks has begun. (Spring 2002) |

This photo was taken two years after construction of the wetland. There is more wetland vegetation, but the two trees have begun to die back due to the raised water table. (Spring 2003) |

This photo was taken three years
after construction. The wetland vegetation is even more
established now, but the trees have died back even further;
the red oak, on the left, is completely dead. (Spring
2004)

This is a view of the same
area from the berm on the other side, shortly after the water
level rose; in this view, the red oak is on the right, and
the boxelder is on the left. (Autumn 2001)
|

This is another view from
the berm, using the same two trees as reference points, showing
well-established wetland vegetation. (Spring 2004) |

This is a view from the back
area of the wetland, just as construction began; note the
snag (dead tree) in the foreground. (Autumn 2001) |
|

This is the same view from
the back of the wetland, showing how the water surrounds the
snag. (Spring 2004) |

This is a closer look at the
boxelder, just after construction began; an island was created
by excavating the soil surrounding the tree. (Autumn
2001)

This is the boxelder and its
island, in the winter immediately following construction.
(Winter 2001-2002) |
|

This is the same view of the
boxelder and its island, showing how wetland vegetation has
grown over the island. (Spring 2004)
|

This is a view of one the
other islands, the first spring after construction.
(Spring 2002) |

This is the same island, after
wetland vegetation has filled in. (Spring 2004) |
