OUR MISSION             SERVICES WE OFFER

CONSULTANT QUALIFICATIONS

The examination of a tree's root flare typically involves excavation of the structural
roots and checking them for defects, decay, or cavities.  Here, Jason Lubar is using a
wooden mallet to sound for hollow areas in the root flare of a prominent specimen
black oak (
Quercus velutina) across from the George D. Widener Education Center at
the Arboretum.  This is a simple but effective method, and it does not harm the tree.

Our team uses state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to gather data, resulting in more informed recommendations to the client.  A Resistograph, a hand-held machine that measures the resistance of wood to a 1/8-inch diameter brad-point drill bit as it bores into the trunk or limb, can be used to detect sudden changes in density indicating the presence of decay, and quantify the depth to the defect.  The paper printout below shows that there was a little more than four inches of sound wood behind the bark of a tree that was tested, but after that there was a hollow several inches deep.

Our Mission

Our mission is to be a source of unbiased, professional expertise in the field of arboriculture.  The Morris Arboretum Consultants team has over 30 years of experience providing high-quality assistance to a wide range of clients with diverse needs.

"We have developed a systematic method of onsite analysis and data collection, report writing, information presentation, and client education based on contemporary technologies.  This methodology is used to enumerate conditions germane to client-defined needs concerning their natural resources".

- A. William Graham, Team Leader, ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist, ISA Certified Master Arborist

Once a tree survey has been done, we will create a map of your property showing the locations of all of the trees.

The Logan Circle fountain in Philadelphia is surrounded by empress-trees (Paulownia tomentosa); in 2004, the Outreach Arborist Consultants were contracted to perform hazard inspections on these trees, many of which are almost a century old.

Services We Offer

Tree Inventories  Tree and natural resource inventories are essential for planning, maintenance scheduling, cost estimating, mapping, and managing resources and decision-making.  Your trees are identified to the species or hybrid level (and often to the sub-species or horticultural variety), measured, and assigned an inventory number.

Assessment (including Hazard Assessment)  We can assess the health of your trees and natural resources.  We can diagnose pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies, identify injuries and weaknesses, and recommend remedial pruning, cabling, fertilization, or removal if necessary.  This information can pinpoint trees that constitute a safety hazard, and, when coupled with an inventory, provides essential information for developing management priorities, budgeting, and planning.

Computerized Digital Mapping  The Morris Consultants can depict your natural resources in CAD (using AutoCAD) or GIS (using ArcVIEW).  Trees can be referenced with information from our inventories/assessments, while tree icons can show canopy size, tree type, life expectancy or other information.

Tree Protection During Construction  Before construction begins, it is important to adequately protect trees by involving the Morris Consultants in all project phases, from initial planning to after-construction tree care.  We identify tree protection zones, structural root zones, and can estimate the chances of tree mortality if protection zones are violated.

Cost Estimation and Planning   We use our inventory/assessment information to estimate the cost of tree removals, stump grinding, pruning, cabling, and other tasks.  We can prepare a prioritized phased management program customized to fit your budget.  We can provide valuable advise on such issues as tree pruning, tree removal, lightning protection, and new tree planting and selection.

Workshops, Courses, Training  We provide introductory through expert-level courses and seminars on a wide range of arboricultural topics.  These sessions provide hands-on training and background information, enabling our clients to actively manage their tree resource using best management practices and the most current standards.  A recent popular subject has been target pruning, which involves correct location of pruning cuts to encourage strong branch formation, while ensuring that the tree can heal properly and quickly.  (Target pruning mimics the natural tendencies of trees to "self-prune" unwanted limbs while causing the least harm to the living portion of the tree.)  See below for a list of classes we offer*.

Signage, Interpretation  The Morris Consultants team can help culture and foster an appreciation of your site by designing a system of interpretive signs, reference labels, and educational displays.

Diagnostics and Soil Testing  We diagnose problematic tree health and safety conditions by using the most up-to-date specialty tools such as the Resistograph, a handheld device which can detect rot, cracks, cavities, or sound wood within the tree.

Specification/Ordinance Writing/Development  The Morris Consultants can craft tree-related specifications customized to fit your project.  Rather than adopting an "out-of-the-can" tree ordinance, we can work with you to develop ordinances that fit your particular needs and circumstances.

Our team is trained and equipped to provide you with a full range of arborist services.

Consultant Qualifications

The Morris Arboretum's Arboricultural Consulting team includes both nationally and regionally recognized experts in the tree care.  The team's three International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified arborists are led by senior consultant A. William Graham Jr., a Registered Consulting Arborist in the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA), a level of accreditation that requires demonstrated technical and report-writing skills at the highest professional tier.

Technologies we use include hand-held electronic data recording devices used during field surveys, electronic soil testing equipment and laboratory analysis, and CAD and GIS analysis.

Other consulting resources of the Morris Arboretum include experts in botany, urban forestry, horticulture, and landscape maintenance.  These experts can bring a broad range of in-depth knowledge to your project.
