ROOM SELECTION 2008-2009
While it seems like your son or daughter just settled into this school year, you may already be hearing from them about housing for next year. We try to provide information early in the year so that students have time to consider the alternatives when making their housing decisions. In this newsletter we hope to provide you with some of the same information so that you can begin to discuss housing options when your son or daughter visits for Thanksgiving or winter break.
In general, there continues to be strong interest in living on campus as the
College Houses continue to offer many benefits, including the convenience of
location. Approximately, 60% of the undergraduates live on campus. While we do
not guarantee housing, there are typically enough beds for students who wish to
return. However, roughly 100-150 students do end up on a waiting list until we
receive cancellations. We simply do not have the room types students want to
accommodate everyone at the time of room selection. If students are openminded
regarding their choices, we are very successful at placing students
through spring and summer.
On-campus room selection for Fall 2008 begins soon after students return from
semester break in January. We begin to host information sessions and send out
information in October and continue through the months that follow until the
process is complete. Penn’s process has 3 phases and favors those students
who return to their College House because we are trying to promote House
community. Those students who apply to change Houses are assigned after
House residents. With this in mind, we offer these tips to your son or daughter
to increase their chances of securing on campus housing:
-
Consider returning to the same College House. All Houses allow students to return and current House residents are placed first.
-
Be realistic with housing preferences. There are certain room types that are
extremely popular and limited in number. Some examples include apartments
that offer private bedrooms, kitchen and bath such as single apartments, two bedroom
double apartments, three-bedroom triple apartments, and four bedroom
quad apartments. These are filled by students returning to their
same House and who have the most seniority within their House.
-
Apply for a wide range of choices; however, students should not list any type
they will not live in. We do not accept room change requests at this time, and
cancellation fees apply from the moment a space is assigned.
-
Do not miss any housing deadlines. Information is posted on the Housing web
site, e-mail reminders are sent, information is distributed in the mail. There
are few good excuses for missing a deadline!
-
Do not apply for sheer speculation. Again, cancellation fees will be applied, but
more importantly, another student may be waitlisted.
If you have any questions about the room selection process, please contact the
Assignments Office, 215-898-8271, at any time. If your son or daughter is
interested in off campus housing, the Office of Off-Campus Living
(www.upenn.edu/offcampusliving) is an excellent resource for local listings and
provides information on the rental process

Credits are currently being processed. If you have access via PennPay and the charge still appears on your bill, please ask your student to check Penn-In-Touch for an up-to-date bill. PennPay is updated monthly, and Penn-In-Touch is updated within 24 hours of a change. If the charge appears on their Penn-In-Touch, please ask them to contact our office at 215-898-3547.
