Privacy

In all residences, the University remains committed to protecting the privacy of its residents. Therefore, mail and packages, room/building entry, video monitoring, etc. are strictly regulated and closely monitored for any improprieties.

Closed circuit television cameras are used on Penn's campus exclusively to monitor and record public areas for purposes of safety and security. Penn's policy on the use of CCTV includes significant and important privacy protections. For example, these cameras only observe what is in plain view and are not used in residential hallways and lounges unless the Vice President of Public Safety determines a specific safety/security risk exists. There is a notice to the community posted on each camera. Video tapes are securely stored and destroyed after 30 days unless they are needed in a law enforcement investigation. The tapes can only be released with the permission of the Vice President of Public Safety and the CCTV Monitoring Panel or as required by law.

The University policy on CCTV Monitoring and Recording of Public Areas for Safety and Security Purposes can be found on the Division of Public Safety website under Closed Circut Television.
