About Sansom Place

Sansom Place is a vibrant community composed of two high rise apartment buildings. 350 Undergraduates are assigned to rooms on contiguous floors in Sansom Place West. 700 Graduate students comprise 75% of the building population, occupying lower floors of Sansom West and all of Sansom East.

Graduate students choose Sansom Place for its excellent campus location, convenient to most schools and centers. Undergraduates usually select Sansom Place for a more private, independent lifestyle.

Some of the many benefits of living in Sansom Place include the convenience of being within a short walking distance of academic facilities, Penn’s cultural resources, restaurants and shopping.

Safety and security are also strong points for Sansom Place, with 24 hour manned entrances with access control, and state of the art fire detection systems.The building offers both wired and wireless internet access.

Privacy Sansom Place offers a quiet environment well-suited for a busy academic schedule. All units offer single occupancy or a private bedroom.

Flexibility Sansom Place offers different occupancy periods, so you may request to live in one that will accommodate your academic schedule. Graduate students have access to their residences during the academic year vacations. If you want to change your room or building, you may do so by applying for a room change during the designated periods.

A Community Living Environment Living among other students provides the best opportunity to met people with whom you can socialize and study. Events, activities and programs are offered through the Sansom Community Services staff, a team of live-in student staff who are there to provide support to the Sansom residents.

Accommodations: Each high rise offers single rooms, and one and two bedroom apartments.

  • One bedroom apartments accommodate one or two students. They include a kitchenette with breakfast bar, living area and barhoom. A sofa is provided. Two bedroom apartments accommodate two students. These units have a kitchenette, dining area (tables and chair provided), and a bathroom. Note that there is no living room.
  • Single rooms share a bathrooms with one or two other rooms. These rooms do not have kitchenettes; however, residents may bring or rent small refrigerators.
  • All units are furnished and seasonally air conditioned. Rent is billed monthly.

The Sansom Community Services team welcomes all residents to the community. A subdivision of Housing Services, the SCS office and staff team infuses the Sansom community with energy, activities, support and advocacy

Sansom Community Services (SCS) strives to provide support services and advocacy for Sansom Place residents. Most SCS services are available to the larger Penn Community, as well.

Programs, Events and Activities: There is always something exciting going on at Sansom Place. Keep an eye out for events and activities advertised on bulletin boards througho Events and programs are developed in partnership with residents. Past activities have included:

  • Patio Barbeques
  • Shopping trips to IKEA and local outlet malls
  • Theater outings
  • Movie nights
  • Community dinners
  • Massage and yoga workshops

Meet the Staff: The SCS team, comprised primarily of Penn students, shares the goal of developing a strong residential community and helping to ensure that the resident’s experience is consistent with the University’s pursuit of academic excellence. More specifically, the SCS staff strives to

  • Support and assist all residents of Sansom Place
  • Set and enforce University policies and procedures
  • Address concerns regarding quality of life
  • Supervise the Sansom Place Residential Staff

Leadership is provided by a full time, professional staff director and a staff of graduate and undergraduate Sansom Coordinators and Sansom Advisors. These student staff are similar to resident advisors and live and work in Sansom Place. They are readily accessible to residents. They strive to enhance the community environment by organizing an array of programs and activities geared to bring residents together, help them make acquaintanceship with other residents, and to navigate Penn and Philadelphia.

Sansom Coordinators: Sansom Coordinators work behind the scenes to supervise the Sansom Advisors, managers and run the building’s computer lab.

Everyday Living at Sansom Place:

Reporting Facilities Concerns & Submitting Repair Requests:

Sansom residents with facilities concerns are asked to submit a Facilities Services repair request. To do this, visit the Penn Portal, to Residential Information, and click on “Facility Focus Maintenance Request” (Click here for instructions). If it is an emergency, please call the Facilities Work Control Group directly at 215.898.7208.

A liaison between Sansom residents and Facilities Services is Residential Services Administrator, Derek Hunsberger. Derek holds regular officehours once a week in the Sansom West lobbly. You can also reach him via living@exchange.upenn.edu .

Safety and Security:

Access to Sansom Place is limited to PennCard holders and their guests. University employees and authorized contractors must display appropriate identification at all times and are admitted during certain hours upon presentation of a valid ID. Further limitations may be instituted from time to time.

Extensive perimeter security includes alarmed, automatic locking doors, video cameras in remote locations, and 24 hour security at each entrance. Exterior lighting, yellow emergency phones and public safety personnel support security operations outside of the buildings and around campus.

Penn students also have access to both walking (215-898-WALK) and riding escort services (215-898-RIDE). Safety and security is a shared responsibility! For more information, visit the Public Safety Website.

Sansom Place is equipped with state of the art life safety systems comprised of fire alarms, sprinkler system, smoke detectors and heat detectors in rooms and in public areas, and a voice annunciation system that provides spoken direction to residents in case of a fire or other emergency.

Services:

The Information Center of each building is located right at the entrance area. The Info Center is open 24 hours/day, 365/yr. Residents can utilize the Info Center to sign out a lock out key, borrow a vacuum cleaner, obtain guest passes, report conditions in the building and get answers to almost all of your questions.

The Community Forum is an assembly for consultation, advice, and discussion. Meetings are open to all Sansom Place residents. Forum gatherings are designed to help address the needs and concerns of all Sansom Place residents. The Community Forum is your sounding board, your voice by which your university related issues can be presented to the administration.
