As a tenant you may be responsible for making the necessary arrangements to get utility services. Leases vary as to which utilities are included in the rent. When renting an apartment, water and sewer services are almost always the responsibility of the landlord and heat (using gas, electricity or oil) may sometimes be included in rent. If not included, it will most likely be a significant item on your apartment expense list. The cost of fuel has increased quite steeply over the past winter and is likely to continue to increase. When you are renting a house, in most cases the responsibility for all utilities rests with the tenants. It is important to check the lease and see what you are responsible for. Set up your own accounts at the beginning of the lease and make sure you close the accounts at the end of the lease. If you do not, you will continue to be liable for utilities in your name even after you have moved out of the premises. For assistance with budget planning see our budget sheet. Remember that tenants are always responsible for telephone service. The companies you will have to contact for utility services are below.
