Areas and Neighborhoods of Choice for Penn Graduate Students

Penn is part of a dynamic community in University City with housing options for graduate students both on and off campus. Graduate students from Penn typically choose to live either on campus in Sansom Place, in the University City/West Philadelphia area, Center City Philadelphia, or the surrounding Philadelphia region.

According to 2010 student demographic information , a large majority of graduate students - at least 76%, numbering about 10,000 - reside off-campus in the Philadelphia area. The studetns with expired addresses and those listing department or P.O. boxes are also likely to be off-campus.

On-Campus Residences

On-campus housing options include two high-rise apartment buildings at Sansom Place accommodating approximately 800 graduate and 300 undergraduate students. These are conveniently located within walking distance of all campus facilities. Options include one and two bedroom apartments and single rooms. Of the graduate students living off-campus in 2010, approximately one-third resided in University City/West Philadelphia, slightly more than one-third in Center City, and the rest across the Philadelphia region and New Jersey.

Of the graduate students who reside in Center City, 3,134 (87%) lived west of Broad Street, closer to the Penn campus, versus 483 (13%) east of Broad Street.
