Obtaining a PennCard - Students

Student PennCardStudents
All currently enrolled students of the University of Pennsylvania are entitled to a PennCard. Please use the following procedure to obtain your Student PennCard:

  • Bring a valid form of photo Id (driver's license, passport, etc.) to the PennCard Center.
  • You will then be issued a PennCard good for the length of your course of study as determined by your school.
  • There is no charge for your initial PennCard.

New Students
If you are a new student and you have submitted your PennCard application, you may pick up your PennCard at the Campus Express center in Houston Hall during New Student Orientation (Note: Law and Wharton MBA candidates may obtain their PennCards through the process communicated by the their Student Affairs office). All other students may obtain their PennCards from the PennCard Center located on the 1st floor of the Franklin building (suite 150) on Walnut Street, between 34th and 36th streets. Students on Leave of Absence
Students of the University of Pennsylvania who are not currently enrolled but have not yet completed their course of study are entitled to a PennCard. Please use the following procedure to obtain your Student on Leave PennCard:

  • Contact the person or office in your school responsible for updating Student Account Adjustments (SAJ), and ask to be billed the Special Services Fee for Students on Leave. The fee is billed per semester.
  • Wait 24 hours.
  • Go to Student Financial Service (SFS), located in Room 100 of the Franklin Building, and ask for a copy of your bill showing the most recent transactions. This bill should show the Special Services Fee as a pending charge for the current semester. If this charge does not appear on the statement that you receive from SFS, please give your school office another few days, or contact them to see when your account will be updated.
  • Go to the Cashier's Office located in Room 110 of the Franklin Building to pay the Special Services Fee. Remember to get a receipt.
  • Bring your receipt to the PennCard Center and you will be issued a Student on Leave card good for the number of semesters for which you have paid the Special Services Fee.
  • There is a $25.00. charge for this card. When you are once again an enrolled student you may turn in your Student on Leave card and a new Student PennCard will be issued at no cost to you if you turn in your unexpired Student on Leave card.

English Language Program Students
All currently enrolled English Language Program Students are entitled to a PennCard. Please use the following procedure to obtain your English Language Program PennCard:

  • Bring your embossed English Language Program letter of enrollment to the PennCard Center along with a  valid form of photo Id (driver's license, passport, etc.).
  • You will then be issued a PennCard that will be valid until the end of your program.
  • There is no charge for your initial PennCard.
