Local Newspapers Make Efforts to Keep Advertising Rates Level for 2009
It is typical for the local newspapers to raise their rates each January. However, this year is different. Of the larger local newspapers, City Paper, Philadelphia Weekly, and Metro, none have issued increases for January.
Only the Inquirer and Daily News are raising rates in 2009. The expected increase is only 2%. This is less than half the usual yearly increase. Please call for rate cards or if you have any questions.

Design
Too Many Fonts Can Spoil the Soup
With all the many typefaces available, it's tempting to use all of your favorites on one piece. Using a san serif, such as Arial or Helvetica with a serif, such as Garamond or Times will assure that the piece is easy to read, by adding third designer font such as a script or fun font, as a headline or graphic element will add flair. Using too many fonts creates confusion to the eye and ultimately your message is lost.

Publication Services Partners with Green Vendors
Publication Services seeks out partnerships with print vendors who are not only quality and cost conscious, but who also show commitment to sustainability efforts, both in their own facilities as well as in partnership with Penn's Green initiatives. In addition to FSC Certification (which Penn Publication Services mandates as a partner qualification), many of our print vendors are now using wind energy in the production of our printed materials. The purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates allows wind energy to go into the National Electric Grid which displaces the need for conventional energy sources, such as coal, oil and natural gas. One of our print partner's 50% commitment to emission-free energy is equivalent to preventing the release of 1,056 metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. This is comparable to taking 220 cars off the road or planting 950 acres of trees each year! You may request the wind power logo on the next printing project we produce for your department; just let us know this is important to you and we will match your project up with the appropriate print vendor.
