Design

Good Web Design is Not the Only Consideration

Good design does not necessarily drive people to popular websites. It's important to know your target audience and create a site that will having them coming back often. For example, Burger King's campaign to promote their new chicken products drove people to their low-tech site http://www.subservientchicken.com. This site presents a video of a guy in a homemade chicken suit that actually responds to the user’s typed in command. It's actually fun, but it's not exactly pretty design. Designers can get caught up in making sure their web design is "successful", they create beautiful sites which while perhaps win them kudos from those within the design community, they also create dull and boring experiences for the users, who cannot craft the customized or personalized experience that they crave. Designers need to ultimately make the experience drive the design when creating a popular website.

Printing

Publication Services Selects New Directed Buy Partner

The Directed Buy Program is an initiative intended to increase the spending power of the University by directing all print vendors doing business with Penn Publication Services (and eventually all print vendors doing business with the Penn community) to purchase paper through a single paper distributor.

In our efforts to enhance the value we bring to the University print buying community, Penn Publication Services in conjunction with Penn Purchasing Services has selected a new paper distributor for Penn’s Directed Buy Program effective November 1, 2008. Our decision was based on a number of issues which we feel are critical in moving Penn forward in this arena including, but not limited to, more competitive pricing, a strong commitment to sustainability initiatives and the offer of aggressive marketing and technical support. After much consideration, we have selected xpedx as the paper distributor which best meets Penn’s needs.

This move represents one small part of a much larger Purchasing Services initiative intended to improve the level of services available to the University buying community.
