I have 5 new Dells and want to get MS Office XP licenses. What should I buy and what would it cost?

We're still using Office 97 on two of our systems. How would I upgrade them to Office XP? How much would it cost?

We just purchased 10 systems with Windows 2000 pre-installed. At some point in the future we'll upgrade to Windows XP. What are our options?

Can we purchase the Select CD's and use them with MOLP licenses?

Does new Server software still include five Client Access Licenses (CALs) with the product?

Are my existing MOLP licenses still valid?

I have new machines with Win 2000 pre-installed but I want to put NT on them instead. How can I purchase NT?

NOTE: If you don't see your question on this FAQ, or would like general advice regarding what licensing options make sense for you, please call or email the Office of Software Licensing.

I have 5 new Dells and want to get MS Office XP licenses. What should I buy and what would it cost?"

There are two options:

(1) If you want to have the ablity to upgrade to a future version of Office any time before July 23, 2003, then you would buy the License-plus-Software-Assurance and one CD set. This gives you the perpetual license plus upgrade rights through July 2003, and the CD will be used to install all five licenses. The cost would be $10 for the CD pack, and $94 for each license, a total of $480.

(2) If you don't want Software Assurance you would buy five new new licenses and one CD set. This gives you five perpetual licenses (you may use that version of the software for as long as you like), and the CD will be used to intall all five licenses. The cost would be $10 for the CD pack, and $59 for each license, a total of $305.

We're still using Office 97 on two of our systems. How much would it cost to upgrade them to Office XP Pro?

Purchasing Upgrade Advantage allows you to run either Office 2000 or Office XP, and to upgrade to any other version that might be released before July 2003. You will need a CD set for either Office 2000 or Office XP, whichever you choose. The total cost would be a total of $118 ($10 for the CD media, plus $54 for each license).

We just purchased 10 systems with Windows 2000 pre-installed. At some point in the future we'll upgrade to Windows XP. What are our options?

Windows 2000 is still considered the "current" version of Windows by Microsoft. With the release of Windows XP, however, one day Windows 2000 will be bumped to the "non-current" list. Because of that, you have three options:

1. If you decide to act while Windows 2000 is "current", then Software Assurance at $37 for each license is your option.

2. If you decide to act after Windows 2000 drops off the "current" list (but before July 31, 2002), then Upgrade Advantage at $55 per license is your option.

3. The third option is to do nothing, and later when you decide to upgrade you would purchase new licenses for Windows XP at $63 per license.

Can we purchase the Select CD's and use them with MOLP licenses?

Select media is only to be used for Select licenses. You will need to purchase a new Select License or one of the Select Upgrade Options and then use the Select CD media for installation.

Does new Server software still include five Client Access Licenses (CALs) with the product?

The Microsoft Select licenses are sold ala carte, meaning that you will need to purchase Server software and a Client Access License for each system accessing the server.

Are my existing MOLP licenses still valid?

MOLP licenses and Select Licenses are perpetual, meaning you may run that version you purchased for as long as you like. Upgrading either license type requires the purchase of Software Assurance or Upgrade Advantage before July 23, 2002, in order to to move to another version.

I have new machines with Win 2000 pre-installed but I want to put NT on them instead. How can I purchase NT?

OEM products do not have downgrade rights, so in order to run NT, you will need to purchase an upgrade option before you can legally run the lower version of the operating system. In addition, you will need to purchase the Select CD media for Windows NT.
