Dear Colleague and Friend:

Thirty years ago Maurice Burrison had a vision to provide a place to foster a visual dialogue among artists and those interested in art in the University and West Philadelphia communities. The Burrison Gallery is Maury’s legacy to us – an intimate exhibition space where dozens of new and established artists have displayed their work, adding a distinctive ambience to the University Club at the University of Pennsylvania.

The artists who have shown their work in the Gallery are too numerous to list, but here are the names of some of the past artists - Bruce Montgomery, Sam Maiten, Norman Nilsen, Charles Lee, Deena Gu, Rosemary Stevens, Hitoshi Nakozato, Howard Perlmutter, Michelle Sun, Benjamin Pierce, and Bill Bank.

The Gallery Advisory Committee, with the assistance of a student coordinator, has created a roster of interesting exhibitions for 2008/2009.

Many faculty and staff made generous contributions last year ranging from $10.00 to as high as $500. It’s time once again to renew your commitment by making a tax deductible gift to the 2008 Burrison Gallery Annual Appeal. Your contribution goes directly to defray the costs of operating the Gallery. For your convenience, you can now make your donation on-line! Or if you prefer, you may send in your check payable to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania.

We greatly appreciate your past financial support, and look forward to your continued financial support of the Gallery.

SYNTHESIS

New Body of Work by DANIEL WILDER

Ongoing through May 31, 2008

Wilder’s new series of paintings titled “Synthesis,” will be showing at the Burrison Gallery from April 14 through May 30, 2008. In the literal sense synthesis means to compose or combine diverse parts or elements so as to form a coherent whole. Keeping within this concept, several artistic theories such as Figurative Abstraction, Free Form and Suprematism have been utilized to create the Synthesis series.

“On a visceral level, the Synthesis series was inspired by observations of my neighborhood in South Philly and the changes it has gone through over the last four years. Somehow it all comes together and just works.” Daniel Wilder

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Daniel Wilder
Born: Chicago, IL 1951

In 1973 Wilder moved from Chicago, IL to Santa Cruz, CA where he enrolled in the Studio Arts Program at Cabrillo College. Two years later he moved to San Francisco, CA where he continued to develop his artistic style. During these early years of study, Wilder concentrated on the materials and techniques of painting, while developing an interest in the effects that natural and artificial light sources have on pigment colors.

Along with this and influenced by concepts such as Divisionism and French Impressionism, Wilder created a new impasto alla prima painting technique in 1978. Shortly after, a friend visiting Wilder’s studio, dubbed the technique “Ovalism”. Wilder began to work with the textural surface of his technique, so that the play of natural and/or artificial light would act upon the pigment colors and content of his paintings.

In mid 1980 Wilder relocated to Fort Lauderdale, FL. where he continued to develop the textural qualities of Ovalism. In late 1989 Wilder moved back to Chicago, and in 1992 he introduced his concept of “Multi Sensory Media” to the Chicago art community.

Later in 1999 Wilder finished writing a book titled “Art With An Attitude”, A history of materials, techniques and terms concerning the discipline of painting. In 2003 Wilder moved to Philadelphia, PA, where he continues to paint in Ovalism.
